Last weeks' rain on top of the packed snow has made all farm work and any outings a challenge.

The purpose of the FSA guaranteed loan program is to assist lenders in extending credit to family farmers who do not qualify for standard commercial loans.

A beginning farmer is defined as someone who has not operated a farm for more than 10 years, substantially participates in a farm operation and meets the eligibility requirements of the loan program they are applying for.

The USDA has announced that nearly 2,500 applicants will receive disaster assistance through the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP) for losses suffered from Oct. 1, 2011, through Sept. 30, 2013.
