Growing up

Do you remember when you were a little child and people would ask you the question, “What are you going to be when you grow up?”

I recall being asked that question many times. Some of the professions of interest to me at that time were farmer, carpenter, mechanic, plumber, business man and many more. The older I became the more I realized my interests were changing and I was growing up.

At this time in my life I am no longer growing up physically however I am still growing up every day of my life spiritually. I still have much to learn about the word of God and much more about my walk of life with God.

Many years ago we lived in Marietta, Ohio and at that time we purchased 22 acres out in the country and planted several hundred pine trees consisting of white pine and Norway spruce.

My wife Myrna and our three children, Karen, Paul and Dale all pitched in to help me plant the little seedlings. They were about 14 inches high when we planted them and we watched them over the years to be 15 to 18 feet high. They were growing up.

One day as I was walking across my little tree farm I spotted a pine tree that grew up and around a fallen maple tree in an “S” shape. The tree that fell on it when it was small did not stop it from growing up. It continued to grow and eventually even though it was hindered when it was young became straight and tall.

You see it too was growing up. It was doing its very best with the help of Mother Nature to grow up as close to God its creator as possible.

Jesus said,” I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” John 10:10.

“The greatest thing in this world is not so much where we are but in what direction we are moving.” — Oliver Holmes.

Which direction are you going today? Are you still growing daily close to God? Is heaven still your goal? Are the things of this world getting in your way and slowing you spiritual growth down or are you still growing up spiritually and living life everyday to its fullest?

God wants us to grow spiritually every day of our life. We cannot stand still we must move forward. As we grow daily in God’s Word and plan for our life we draw closer to Him. Heaven becomes more real to us every day.

“He is only advancing in life whose heart is getting softer, his blood warmer, his brain quicker, and his spirit entering into living peace’ — John Ruskin.

As you grow let the beauty of Jesus be seen in you.
