The mailbag brought us seven more correct responses on Item No. 605, which we unveiled last week, but no guesses on Item No. 606, which we’ll show here again this week.
All the mail confirms what Bruce Steel told us last week: Item No. 605 is a picket, or snow, fence maker.
John Cleaver of Mount Pleasant, Ohio, says the tool can make either 3- or 4-wire fence, and adds the Mount Pleasant Historical Society has a similar tool set up for three wires and mounted on wheels to run it along the fence line to build a fence on the go!
Don Boron of Magnolia, Ohio, has a similar unit that is mostly wood; only the gears are metal. Although he’s never used it, he says his father and grandfather used it in the early 1900s.
