Hazard A Guess: Week of Nov. 27, 2008

Hello from Hazard!

OK this is a really short deadline week for Hazard because of the Thanksgiving holiday. We are writing this on Thursday afternoon — at the same time most of you were probably reading last week’s paper.

What that means, of course, is that no one can respond to a new item and have their guess in print. Usually, we take a Hazard-like sabbatical for a week. But this week, there are still leftover responses coming in on old items, so we’ll clear up the in-box today.

One more response trickled in on Item No. 848, the water well bailer. Thanks to John D. Keller of Espyville, Pa., for sending his correct answer.

We also heard from four more readers on Item No. 849, which was unveiled last week as a calf weaner. The device is opened wide enough so the silver balls can be inserted into the nose of a calf. When the calf tries to nurse while wearing the device, it gives the cow an uncomfortable poke . She quickly begins to reject her offspring and the calf quickly gets the message. Thus the calf is weaned, although in, as reader Claude Collins of Norton, Ohio, puts it: “a somewhat cruel but effective manner.”

We also heard correctly from Dave Cover of Cortland, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Peck, Albany, Ohio (who also knew how Item No. 848 was used); and Paul Hinkle of Portersville, Ohio, way down in Morgan County (well, at least it’s down from Hazard’s position in Columbiana County).

And here’s the reminder on Item No. 850, which we first showed last week. It’s about 15 tall with the handle up and 9 inches across. It’s made of nickel-plated iron and has the word Yankee printed on the side with a patent pending mark. Both sides are decorated with filigree.

On the right side of the item, there is a clamp where it attaches to the counter. The handle swings clockwise and an inside section on the left slides to the front. When you turn the handle counter-clockwise, the section slides back into place and the rod you see in the picture comes down into a rubber-lined tunnel that also clamps.

At the same time, a couple of forks sticking out to the left of the Yankee mark fold one over the other in a pincher type motion.
