How Old Are You?

Did you ever wonder why we always ask the question, “How old are you?”

I guess it is because we never grow younger, we always grow older.

I remember well the days when I was a young man and my grandfather would remind me that I was not dry behind the ears. I am not sure what it meant, however he enjoyed saying that to me.

Those days are behind me now, and no one says that to me anymore. I guess my gray hair and wrinkles tell on me.

I have made up my mind that if I am going to grow old, I am going to do it gracefully.

William Hazlitt said, “To be happy we must be true to nature and carry our age with us.”

In other words, you can do everything possible to cover it up but it is still there and always will be.

I recall when as a young man I spotted my first gray hair. I thought about pulling it out, but I knew another one would take its place and just maybe more than one.

Sure enough, I now have more than just one. I really do not think I could count them all.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “We do not count a man’s years until he has nothing else to count.”

How old are you?

Age is a quality of the mind:

If you have left your dreams behind,

If hope is cold;

If you no longer look ahead,

If your ambition’s fires are dead —

Then you are old.

But if from life you take the best,

And if in life you keep the jest,

If love you hold;

No matter how the years go by,

No matter how the birthdays fly —

You are not old.
