My New Year’s resolutions never last

How many times have you made a New Year’s resolution and only within a few days or weeks break it? I speak from experience. I must confess that I am guilty. I have only made a few New Year’s resolutions in my lifetime, and I don’t believe they lasted very long. How about you? Or am I the only one?

I like the words of Henry Ward Beecher, “Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anyone else expects of you; never excuse yourself; never pity yourself. Be a hard master on yourself and be lenient to everybody else”.

That sounds like a fairly good way to start the year. You might read it over a few times and you will discover the more you read those words, the more sensible they sound.

We could probably do ourselves a big favor if we would make it a New Year’s resolution and make up our minds to live by it.

I have heard all kinds of New Year’s resolutions over the years, and one of the best is found in Joshua 24:15. From the word of God, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Just think what a change that way of life would do to our world.

Did you ever wonder why people refuse to live their lives serving God?

I always find assurance in God’s word. One of my favorite scriptures is “Lo, I am with you always even unto the end of the world” [Matthew 28:20]. To me, that is the greatest insurance policy available.

A broken New Year’s resolution will do you no good. God does not make New Year’s resolutions. He only makes promises, and He never breaks those promises. May I recommend a New Year’s resolution to you? If so, trust in God, and don’t break it!
