80 years ago this week. Columbiana County Jersey breeders have more than 2,183 purebred cattle, of which 1,630 are registered – the most Jersey cattle owned in any county in the United States. At a recent Jersey breeders’ picnic, county agent C.E. Rowland did hasty calculations to determine the worth of those cattle: more than $800,000.
A farmer in Morgan Township, Hamilton County, Ohio, planted an orchard of 150 trees. When he went to look after it the next day, every tree had disappeared. Footprints of two men were found, but no trace of them has been found.
50 years ago this week. Cheaper beef in this country may be brought about within a matter of months when the U.S. Mexican border will be opened to admit Mexican cattle. It is believed by officials that Mexico is sufficiently free of hoof-and-mouth disease so that the cattle may be safely admitted to this country. The program of eradication has been jointly conducted by the U.S. and Mexico and has cost taxpayers many millions of dollars. Usually the Mexican cattle, which are of good quality but lean, are brought into this country, put in feeder pens, and fattened before being marketed.
25 years ago this week. “No-Till Farmer” magazine named Bob Stewart of Jewett, Ohio, “No-Till Farmer of the Year” for 1976. Stewart first experimented with no-till corn in the late 1950s with a single row tree planter. He now plants 200 acres of no-till corn.
