80 years ago this week. L.B. Palmer of Pataskala was elected president of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, succeeding Oscar E. Bradfute, who resigned when he was elected president of the American Farm Bureau Federation. Palmer has been president of the Ohio Sheep and Wool Growers Association for several years.
A total of 4,661 Ohio farm men and women attended the Farmer’s Week program at Ohio State.
50 years ago this week. Stark County Holstein Club re-elected H. F. Stires of Canton, Ohio, as president. The club elected E. Howard Ehlers of Louisville, Ohio, as vice president, and G. H. Wagner of Canton, Ohio, as secretary.
Dale Cook of Berlin Center and Austin Hayman of Hanoverton are the Mahoning and Columbiana county champions in last year’s National Selected Five Acre Corn Growing Contest using DeKalb Seed.
Cook produced an average of 143.73 bushels dry shelled corn per acre on his test plot using DeKalb 406. Hayman averaged 121.64 bushels per acre using DeKalb 625.
25 years ago this week. If there’s a miracle product for agronomic soils, it’s lime, Penn State’s Dr. Wayne Hinish told a full house attending the annual Soils and Crops Institute in Columbiana and Mahoning counties. And lime must have been a hot topic, for the largest crowd in several years turned out for another event, the Northeast Ohio Lime and Fertilizer Conference.
Wisconsin knocked Ohio out the top 10 in U.S. farm production ranks for 1976, based on money earned from farm product sales. California remains in the top spot, followed by Iowa at No. 2 and Texas in third. For the United States as a whole, net farm income averaged $7,885 per farm, up from 1975’s $7,410, but well below the record $10,529 earned in 1973.
