80 years ago this week. The Belmont County cattle judging team, composed of Elizabeth Willerton, Marion Lyle and Roland Bailey, won the contest at the Ohio State Fair and will now represent Ohio at the national dairy show in Hamlin, Minn. Raymond Bailey served as alternate.
M.J. Samuels of Youngstown announced the 224-acre Shook-Stambaugh farm south of Vienna, Ohio, will be converted into a $150,000 18-hold golf course with “handsome brick clubhouse.”
More than 2,500 Grangers from western Pennsylvania attended the Lawrence County Grange picnic held at the fairgrounds.
50 years ago this week. Columbiana County is the first place in the United States where Ruritan National has instituted clubs north of the Mason and Dixon line.
Three clubs, Fairfield, Lisbon and Hanoverton, will receive charters this week. Membership to Ruritan is open to all farmers and businessmen.
Ruritan was brought up at a recent Columbiana County Agricultural Council and it was voted that the movement was progressive and would be a method of creating more good fellowship among farmers and the small-town businessmen.
25 years ago this week. John Gosty of the Lisbon-Franklin Road didn’t do anything different this year, so the season must account for his double muskmelons. The first one he cut had two separate seed compartments, with considerable flesh in between them. He thought it was unusually sweet. Some seem to be perfect “Siamese twins.” Gosty and his sons operate a feed service, but he says he didn’t feed anything special to the melons.
Nearly one out of every four acres in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties is covered with trees. This makes over 250,000 acres of woodland in the tri-county area, according to James Ball, service forester with the Ohio Department of Forestry. This land is in the care of close to 10,000 woodland owners. In some areas of the state, more land is now covered with trees than at the turn of the century.
