80 years ago this week. Attendance at the first day of the Trumbull County Fair in Warren was estimated at nearly 15,000, one of the largest in the fair’s history. And in Stark County, “a special effort is being made to have 1,000 rabbits shown at the Stark County Fair.”
O.E. Bradfute of Xenia, Ohio, president of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, is in line to succeed James R. Howard, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, who is expected to be named as the farm representative on the federal reserve board and would have to resign from his Farm Bureau post. Bradfute is also the vice president of the national organization.
50 years ago this week. Clyde Hadley, owner of Hadley Motors in Lisbon, Ohio, was approached by a gunman recently as he was about to open his place of business.
Paul Zitto, 35, approached Hadley with a 7.65 mm Czech pistol and attempted to shoot him twice in the back; however, the gun misfired both times. Investigation later revealed that Zitto had loaded the pistol with a .32 caliber cartridge, which was the reason for the misfire.
25 years ago this week. The Columbiana County fairgrounds have not been in better condition for many years. One thing that contributed to the general good appearance this year was three new buildings to house livestock. John Morvatz of Carrollton, who with his young sons has taken up contracting as a sideline, received many compliments for the workmanship in the buildings.
All buildings are open sided with aluminum roofs. Each pole is braced three ways and every pen door fits perfectly. On the one which houses 4-H pigs and sheep, the clubs contributed labor to do the finishing. Most of the pens are of native hardwood. In the cattle barn, the dividers are of full-inch treated commercial boards.
