Everything off the grill is a special treat, maybe in part because a cookout usually means we’re gathered with family and friends. Though grilling seems like it should be a simple task, as with anything, it’s easier if you have the right tools.
My dad first cooked out for our family before gas grills made the scene. Our first charcoal grill was very basic by today’s standards, but it seemed like a big deal then. No electronic grill lighters or charcoal starter chimneys were around to help get things under way. Occasionally, the faint taste of charcoal lighter fluid could be detected (heaven help us) in our meat.
