America’s pastime gets an old twist

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Hoover Sweepers vintage baseball club will kick off its seventh season June 10 with a home game against the Ohio Village Muffins.

Admission is free to all the Sweepers’ home matches, which are held at Hoover Park in North Canton.

The 2001 schedule has 14 matches, including two vintage club tournaments and two exhibition matches.

Spectators who attend the Hoover Sweepers home

matches in the meadow at Hoover Park are eligible for prizes in an attendance drawing. In the season opener at the park against the Ohio Village Muffins, the “cranks” (fans) can register for a free drawing for two tickets to a Cleveland Indians home game.

The next three home matches will offer the “cranks” the opportunity to register for a free drawing for four Canton Crocodile tickets at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. The final home match will offer an attendance drawing for a free Hoover Sweepers T-shirt.

“Cranks” must provide their own seating (picnics are encouraged) since bleachers were not available in the 1860s, the time period the Sweepers role-play.

Home games. The following home games are scheduled: June 10, Ohio Village Muffins; June 24, Canal Dover Red Legs; July 8, Lorain County Buckeyes; Aug. 5, Canal Fulton Mules; and Sept. 23, Lake County Pirates.

All games begin at 1 p.m.
