ARLINGTON, Va. — The American Feed Industry Association and Feedstuffs have named the Cargill Animal Nutrition plant in Martinsburg, Pa., as the 2008 Feed Mill of the Year.
The Cargill plant, managed by Charles Lickteig, is located in the heart of Pennsylvania’s dairy country, and manufactures dairy feed exclusively, with the majority of it in bulk form.
The plant’s associated mineral business, formerly operated as Young’s, is 90 percent dairy focused. The plant is a key part of Cargill’s North East Region operations.
Stood out
The plant stood out because of its outstanding housekeeping, dedication to the local community and safety and its sustained business growth.
The runner-up feed mill is the Ridley Inc. plant, Beloit, Kan. The plant is a large manufacturer of feed for show animals and it produces primarily bagged product.
The annual award recognizes overall excellence in feed manufacturing operations.
Criteria
Increased safety, quality, regulatory compliance, operating efficiencies and overall industry awareness of food safety are among the criteria reviewed for each applicant.
Selection of the top plant starts with an online application process and concludes with personal visits to the top sites by an inspection team from the association and Feedstuffs.
Final selection is based on a combined scoring of the application and personal visit.
More than 60 feed companies from across the nation competed for this year’s award.
