ASHLAND, Ohio — The 46th annual Crestview FFA banquet was held April 16.
Members received Greenhand Degrees and Chapter Degrees.
Every year the chapter awards the Star Greenhand Degree to two first year members. This year’s recipients were Carey Fulk and Lindsey Shoup.
The Star Chapter Degree is given to two second year members that are active in the chapter and was awarded to Heath Gray and Andy Sloan.
Sam Grauer and Loren Hulit received the Outstanding Junior Award and six seniors were awarded with the Outstanding Senior Award, including Jeb May, Misty Hale, Alicia Metzger, Ethan Bernhard, Abe Sauder and David Gerster.
The six members who will receive their State FFA Degree this May in Columbus are Sam Grauer, Loren Hulit, Janey Fulk, Misty Hale, Alicia Metzger and Abe Sauder.
Emily Mack and Zach Grauer will receive their American Degree in October at the National FFA Convention.
The Crestview FFA Chapter presented Honorary Degrees to the Beck family and Adam Esbenshade.
The Crestview FFA alumni gave out there annual Living Legacy Scholarships. They presented the Clarence Fulk Memorial scholarship to David Gerster, the Ivan Esbenshade Memorial scholarship to Alicia Metzger, the Genieva Spoerr Memorial scholarship to Misty Hale, the Emery and Dorothy Grauer Memorial scholarship to Abe Sauder, the Irvin “Duke” White Memorial scholarship to Ethan Bernhard and the John Sherrick Memorial scholarship to Jeb May.
The first Le-Mac scholarship was awarded to Tiffany Boyce in recognition of Lee and Maxine Oswalt.
Several graduates also received scholarships, including Emily Mack, Alaine Esbenshade, Amanda Esbenshade, Zach Grauer, Veronica Sauder and Kory Pruner.
Jed Sauder also received a scholarship to attend the Washington Leadership Conference.
The 2009-10 officer team was installed and includes Janey Fulk, president; Loren Hulit, vice president; Carey Fulk, secretary; Heath Gray and Andy Sloan, treasurers; Sam Grauer and James Dotterer, reporters; Jed Sauder, sentinel and Erin Bramblett, student adviser.
The Crestview FFA Dairy Cattle Judging team, consisting of Heath Gray, James Dotterer, Ethan Bernhard, Rachel Powers and Janey Fulk, traveled to the Ohio State Expo Center for their state competition.
Out of 233 students judging cattle, Gray led the team with a fifth place finish.
Overall the team’s score was 1,520 points, landing them a third place finish out of 54 teams.
ASHLAND, Ohio — The Mapleton FFA Meats Team competed in the State Meats Judging CDE May 1 and placed eighth in the state.
The team consisted of Stacy Watts, Shelby Rohr, Jarrod Brant, Jared Wynn, Jeffry Smith, Jonathan Pickering and Ranelle Johns.
ALBANY, Ohio — The Alexander High School FFA chapter attended the 81st Ohio State FFA Convention May 1-2.
Kara Oberholzer received first place in her proficiency of small animal production and care, as well as receiving second place while running for District 10 Star in Agri-Business.
Ben Smith received second place in his proficiency of Home and Community Development.
Two members, Kathy Kasler and Chelsea Saunders, received their State Degrees and Zach Crabtree received second in running for District 10 Star Farmer.
Heather Gould was selected to perform in the State FFA choir.
The chapter received a plaque in recognition of it donating a state suggested amount of money to the CROP organization.
JEROMESVILLE, Ohio — Hillsdale FFA attended the 81st Ohio FFA State Convention May 1-2.
The Ohio FFA state officers recognized the members from winning teams going to the National Convention in October.
Individuals and teams competed in multiple contests.
The Grain Merchandising team placed fifth overall. Team members included Jeff Stimmell, placing sixth, Hannah Fulk, Kelsey Dropsey and Zach Fulk.
The Ag Engineering team placed 11th overall. Team members included Michael Schuck, Jared Whitcomb, Andrew Baldner and Cody Cline.
The CO-OPS team placed third overall. Team members included Hannah Shock, placing ninth, Joe Grimwood, Kristin Deter and Kelsey Eberly.
The Greenhand Quiz team placed sixth overall. Team members included Dylan Mullins, placing sixth, Madison Hays, Kayla Fox and Tiffany Willis.
The Meats team placed 12th overall. Team members included Heather Heffelfinger, Sara Tallmadge, Kristin Deter and Mariah Gibbons.
Six members received their state degrees and include Jeff Stimmell, Kelsey Clark, Dan Brockway, Joel Brockway, Nick Farquhar and Tiffany Heiby.
WASHINGTON — A total of 50 $1,000 scholarships for agricultural studies have been awarded by the National FFA Organization in conjunction with the American Farm Bureau Federation and the Dodge Division of Chrysler LLC.
Dodge provided funding, and a stipulation for earning the scholarship was that the FFA student had to be from a Farm Bureau family.
Selection of winners also was based on the applicant’s academic record, FFA and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural experience program in agricultural education and future goals.
The scholarship winners from Farm and Dairy’s primary circulation area include: Gail Peak, Madison, Ind.; Skylar Powlen, Kewanna, Ind.; Elizabeth Oliver, Byron, Mich.; Aaron Santangelo, Cuba, N.Y.; Christopher Holter, Racine, Ohio; Nicole Steinmetz, Bellevue, Ohio; Sara Bechtel, Martinsburg, Pa. and Leesha Campbell, Salt Rock, W.Va.
CADIZ, Ohio — Two teams from Harrison Central High School FFA participated in the 2009 AREA III Envirothon held at Camp Muskingum in Carroll County May 6.
Harrison Central High School joined 58 teams from a 16-county area to participate in this year’s outdoor competition, which tested students’ knowledge of soils and land use, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues.
Granville High School from Licking County, finished first in the competition. Mid-East Career and Technology Center from Muskingum County followed in second place. Buckeye Career Center of Tuscarawas County landed a third place finish and New Lexington High School from Perry County took home fourth place honors.
The top four teams advance to the state competition June 7-9 at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
LOUDONVILLE, Ohio — The top honor of Star State Degree in Agricultural Placement was presented to Loudonville FFA member and LHS graduate Mitchell Rooks.
The Star State award is given to only one FFA member in the state.
Rooks earned his State FFA Degree in 2007 and then reapplied for the Star State award this year.
Rooks’ award is based on the cumulative efforts of four years of FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience projects with 5,600 logged hours of work at Rooks Brothers Dairy in rural Perrysville where they milk 120 cows and farm 850 acres of crops.
Rooks was also awarded two other high honors of first place Dairy Placement Proficiency and second place Diversified Crop Placement Proficiency.
Rooks’ dairy placement award will now be passed onto the National FFA level for further consideration, with the finalists being interviewed in October in Indianapolis.
Rooks is the son of Bob and Julie Rooks of Perrysville and attends OSU/ATI in Wooster majoring in dairy and crop management.
HANOVERTON, Ohio — Students from United FFA held a petting zoo at Crestview Elementary in Columbiana May 6 for students in kindergarten through fourth grade.
FFA members brought in chickens and chicks, pigs, rabbits, a lamb, a goat, a Jersey calf, and a horse.
Members told the elementary students a little about the animals while they got a chance to pat each one.
FFA members gave a presentation in each classroom about how to grow a corn plant. Each student was given a tube with soil and two kernels of corn to take home and watch grow.
United FFA members use the petting zoo to promote agriculture.
In addition, the United Local High School FFA competed in Ohio’s Envirothon competition held at Camp Asbury in Portage County.
The envirothon is a competition that tests a team’s knowledge of natural resources and the environment.
The team placed second out of 80 teams from 17 counties in northeast Ohio. The competition is broken into five different categories; wildlife, soils, aquatics, forestry, and current environmental issues.
This year’s theme for the current environmental issue was Biodiversity in a Changing World.
The United FFA team now has the opportunity to advance to the state competition in June.
