DULUTH, Ga. — Jeb May, a 2009 graduate of Crestview High School, Ashland, Ohio, was one of 18 recipients of a $2,000 AGCO and AGCO Finance National FFA Scholarship.
May’s parents are Judy May and Phil May of Ashland. Jeb is attending the University of Akron and plans to major in engineering.
ANDOVER, Ohio — The Pymatuning Valley FFA has had a busy start to their season with numerous activities. They had the haunted hayride at the antique engine grounds in Wayne Township. Many of the members participated in the activity that raised $600.
The 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis ran Oct. 21-24. In attendance were Tricia Lautanen, Ashley Persion, Tyler Gruskieciewic, Kayla Shreves, Bo Shreves, John Priddy, Ethan Crawford, Anthony Montello, Hunter Hamiliton, Steve Martin, Jason Krulic, Natilie Bessman, Robbie Bevins and Emilee Tucker.
The chapter was honored to have to former members of their chapter receive the American Degree. The recipients of this degree were Josh Berrier and Tyler Polchin.
From the start of the school year the Pymatuning Valley FFA Chapter has been running a mentorship program for their first-year members.
The chapter also held a harvest party Nov. 2 as a get-together for the chapter members.
Fruit sales started Oct. 26 and will be delivered to the high school Dec. 3.
The Greenhand induction is Nov. 17 for the first-year members. This is the first degree that they will be receiving as they become members of the FFA.
The Pymatuning Valley Parliamentary Procedure Team has been preparing for the upcoming subdistrict competition at Southeastern High School.
The team this year consists of 13 members: Tricia Lautanen, Stephanie Waid, Casey Edleman, Tiffany Byler, Katelynn McGuness, Maxine Semi, Kayla Shreves, Bo Shreves, Jessica Krulic, Randi McCallister, Jason Krulic, Emilee Tucker and Tyler Gruskieciewic.
SMITHVILLE, Ohio — On Nov. 11, Smithville FFA invited local veterans to an assembly put together by the members of the FFA.
Members made breakfast for the veterans and then they entered the gymnasium, where the colors were presented by Boy Scout Honor Guard Troop 73, Kayla Raines sang The Star Spangled Banner and middle school students read papers about “What Veterans Day Means to Me.”
Rachel Howland introduced the guest speaker Richard Dale. The third and fourth-grade choir performed, and the program ended with the playing of taps.
MILLERSBURG, Ohio — Members of the West Holmes FFA chapter Tyler Schonauer, Cynthia Bunch, Kiersten Sigler, Casey Schlauch, Elizabeth Overholt and Samantha Krejci headed to The Ohio State University in Columbus to attend “Ag Comm Boot Camp.”
The workshop was designed to help members interested in participating in the agricultural communications contest this year.
The ag communications team competed in the district contest Nov. 12.
The chapter had the chance to participate in the Loudonville Street Fair Oct. 5-10. The fair’s theme for this year was Small Town, Big Fair so the chapter decided to put a spin on the theme and focus around the Ohio State Buckeyes with “Small Town, Big Fans.”
The Kettering Display exhibit features agricultural products and goods ranging from fruits and veggies to pumpkins and gourds in a 10-foot display. The chapter placed second.
Also exhibiting at the street fair was Garrett O’Donnell, welding board; Kyle Hanna, breeding heifer and Caleb Chanay, breeding heifer.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Three Firelands FFA members received their American Degrees at the National FFA Convention.
The three award winners this year are 2008 Firelands High School graduates: Jodie Crawford, a sophomore at Lorain County Community College; John Grills, who is attending courses at Lorain County Community College; and Kyle Zukowski, who is attending The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute.
In addition, the Firelands FFA Chapter, in conjunction with Tractor Supply Company and the National FFA Association, are sponsoring Harvest for America as a special project to collect food for local food shelves. The FFA Community Service Committee is heading up the project and will be collecting canned goods in first period classes from Nov. 10 – 24 at Firelands High School.
The Amherst Tractor Supply store is also providing retail space for food collection bins.
HANOVERTON, Ohio — United FFA President Brent Baker and Vice President Caleb Swope awarded three fourth grade students for their participation in a cabbage growing contest.
Winners of the contest were Brent Dustman, Courtney Cooper and Austin Beckett.
Each year Bonnie Plants donates enough cabbage plants for each third grade student to receive a plant. At the end of last year, Baker and Swope put together a PowerPoint presentation for the third grade classes and taught each student how to plant and care for their cabbage.
They held a contest to see who could grow the biggest cabbage over the summer. At the beginning of this school year, students brought in a picture and the measurements of their cabbage.
