WELLINGTON, Ohio — The Wellington FFA, Firelands FFA and the JVS FFA participated in the annual county Food For America at the fairgrounds Oct. 9.
The educational event is coordinated for fourth graders, and includes 20 stations the students visit, led by FFA member as a guide. Stations included animals brought by the members, as well as exhibits from the Farm Service Agency, Ag Credit, LMRE and the sheriff’s canine unit.

BERLIN, Ohio — On Sept. 20, Hiland FFA members Mac Cordle, Grant Mast, Taylor Raber and Kenny Clark competed in the District 8 urban soils judging contest in Muskingum County.
During the contest, students judged three soil pits, took a knowledge base test on urban soils, and soil survey book test.
The team placed sixth overall. Individually, Cordle placed ninth and Mast, 11th.

ALBANY, Ohio — The Alexander FFA chapter assisted the Athens County Farm Bureau’s ag field day Sept. 19 at the Athens County Fairgrounds.
The event drew fourth-grade students from nine schools.
The FFA’ers assisted at six stations, which included a little petting zoo and big petting zoo, soils, ice cream, engineering, and soybean/corn stations.

SMITHVILLE, Ohio — The Smithville FFA chapter held its first meeting Oct. 2. The chapter decided to start fruit sales Oct. 18. The top three fruit sellers will win cash prizes: first place will receive $100, second place will receive $75 and third place will get $50.
The chapter paid for all officers to get polo shirts. Kolstin Hartzler designed the front of the shirts and Kenny Carver designed the back.
Colin Reed placed second individual in county soils in September. Both teams went to districts and the rural team placed fifth. Rural team members were Kenny Carver, Ellie Kauffman, Harold Kennedy and Colin Reed. Colin placed third individual. The urban team placed seventh. Urban team members were Wyatt Baer, Wren Hostetler, Bobby Joyner, Ben Kerner, Dylan Unkefer and Kolstin Hartzler.

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Marlington FFA officers traveled to Columbus, Ohio to the state house for the first annual Ohio Legislative Leadership Conference Sept. 26.
Members worked in the morning with the Ohio Farm Bureau to understand the legislative process and its effect on their education. The members attended the luncheon with several Ohio Senators and Representatives. During the lunch Marlington members were able to interact with legislators and aides about how agricultural policy is handled in the statehouse.
Also, members were fortunate to hear remarks from Governor John Kasich during the event.
In attendance were Vice President Staci Faverty, Secretary Whitley Murphy, Treasurer Brittney Costa, Reporter Haley Faverty, Sentinel Antigone Castellucci and Student Advisor Megan Conrad.
On Oct. 6, the Marlington FFA Chapter competed at the Ohio FFA State Forestry Career Development Event in Nelsonville, Ohio at Hocking College.
The contestants answered an online written test, measured trees for diameter and number of logs, identified forest products and determined the price of the trees in the stand.
High individual from Marlington was senior Nikki Whitcher, followed by junior Brittney Costa, other team members were seniors Ashley Foster and Haley Faverty and junior Miranda White. All five members are also enrolled in the Natural Resources program at Marlington and through their classes they will earn 11 credit hours towards Hocking College upon graduation.
During the Stark County Farm Tour Oct. 7 the Marlington FFA Chapter hosted Kiddie Tractor Races at Mott’s Greenhouse in Louisville, Ohio. The FFA members worked all day during the tour helping over fifty young children pedal the tractors, paint pumpkins and create their very own scarecrow.

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — West Muskingum’s ag program attended the forestry contest Sept. 25 at Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum. Thirteen teams entered to compete in the contest. Eleven students went to represent West Muskingum, including Clay Scott, Dwight Bird, Jack Mills, Mary Teisinger, Caylissa Murrey, Alex Berkfield, Travis Teters, Megan O’Donnell, Indy Gantt, Kathryn Bird, and Myron Wentworth.
West scored 687.6 placing them sixth overall. Clay Scott lead with a score of 240.2 and close behind was Dwight Bird with a score of 238.8 placing them 40th and 43rd respectively.

ANDOVER, Ohio — Recently, District 3 State FFA president, Nicole Steiner, visited the Pymatuning Valley FFA chapter. She demonstrated various leadership activities in several classes and stressed the importance of performing community service activities.

HANOVERTON, Ohio — The United Local FFA chapter put on a petting zoo at the Center for the Developmentally Disabled in Lisbon Oct. 5 for the Harvest Festival. Animals at the event included a horse, three cows (two dairy), a horse, a pygmy goat, a pot-belly pig, rabbits and chickens. Some of United’s Ruriteens also helped. The Harvest Festival is held annually to raise money for expenses for the chapter.
