ASHLAND, Ohio — The Crestview FFA participated in the 2008 Richland County Soils contest in Plymouth Sept. 16. Crestview won first place in both the urban and rural contest.

Placing first in the urban contest was Loren Huliet with a score of 629 and placing second was David Gerster with a 593.

Placing first in the rural contest was Sam Grauer with a score of 424.

The Crestview teams received the Overall County Soils Judging Award.

HANOVERTON, Ohio — Sixteen students of the United FFA received scholarships for working at the all county FFA food Co-op building at the Columbiana County Fair last year.

The United FFA, Minerva FFA, Southern Local FFA, and the Columbiana County Career Center FFA have run the Co-op for more than 10 years and have provided scholarships during this time.

To receive scholarships, students must work two four-hour shifts at the building preparing and selling food during the fair.

Denver Stonestreet, Taylor Burbick, Roger Bernet and Emily Huff will use their scholarships for college.

Other students will use their scholarships for FFA jackets, state FFA convention, national FFA convention, FFA camp or other FFA activities.

BESSEMER, Pa. — The Mohawk FFA went to the Farm Science Review in London, Ohio, Sept.16.

While there, they were able to see many exhibits from a variety of agricultural companies.

They also saw the demonstrations of farm equipment from companies such as Case IH, McCormick, John Deere and many more.

The review had a conservation area called the Gwynne Conservation Area where they could learn about conservation practices that involved forestry, aquatic conservation and wild animal facts, myths and management practices.

CASTALIA, Ohio — The Margaretta FFA chapter had their first recreation activity of the year Sept. 25.

A bonfire was held for members from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the land lab in Castalia. The purpose of the bonfire was for new members and current members to meet one another.

Members enjoyed fishing, corn hole games and s’more making.

The first chapter meeting was held Sept. 29. Committee reports were given at the meeting.

The recreation committee presented ideas for trips and activities and also informed the club that the bon fire was a huge success.

The leadership committee told the chapter members ideas they had and discussed their ideas for the upcoming school year.

The community service committee talked about having an event involving pumpkins in the month of October and more details will be planned soon.

Finally, the fundraising committee announced the chapter would be starting the annual fruit and peanut sale Oct. 3.

After committee reports the meeting discussion moved onto new business.
A motion was passed that chapter dues would be $20 again this year.

Another motion was passed that the FFA chapter would be holding a chili and brat dinner Oct. 17 at the Margaretta FFA building. The dinner will be held before the home football game.

A motion was also passed for the chapter to send members to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.

CRESTON, Ohio — The Norwayne FFA held its annual Barnyard Olympics Sept. 22.

During the chapter business meeting, members discussed hosting a veteran’s breakfast, a canned food drive and adopting a highway. The chapter will pay $60 per person for national convention, and the chapter’s fruit sales will begin Oct. 3. It was also decided the chapter will pay half the price of the FFA jacket for the first two creed speakers.

Barnyard Olympics was held at Ben Mangun’s farm. Activities included rope jousting, bubble blowing contest, whistling contest, tractor pull, bale toss, and milk chugging.

Congratulations are in order for the chapter’s soil judging teams for excellent performances at the county contest, which was held near Waynedale.

In the urban contest, Tricia Bauman placed first; Ryan Billman placed second; Mark Geiser placed third; Derryck Hartong placed fourth and Eric Billman placed fifth.

Others that participated were Andrea Gasser, Kirk Gasser, Nate Gasser, and Abby Winkler.

In the rural contest, Nick Miller placed second; Jacob Tender placed for third; Zac Vance placed fourth; and Jay Stewart placed fifth. Others that participated were Brandon King, Robert Marty, Cody Hartong, Riley Sheppard, Ben Mangun, Jacob Riggenbach, Hailee Beccera and Kyle Noyes.

In the district contest, held in Portage County, the rural team placed sixth with a score of 1,227. The members who participated were Brandon King, Jacob Riggenbach, Riley Sheppard, Jay Stewart and Jacob Tender.

The urban team placed first with a score of 2,262. The members that participated were Tricia Bauman, Eric Billman, Ryan Billman, Mark Geiser and Derryck Hartong.

Individual placings were Eric Billman, first; Ryan Billman, third; and Tricia Bauman, fifth. Norwayne’s urban team will now advance to the state contest.
