A roundup of FFA news for the week of Oct. 3, 2013:

WEST SALEM, Ohio — The Northwestern FFA is selling pink pumpkins by donation to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

All of the money raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation was created in 2012 to help aid in the fight against breast cancer. The pumpkins are a form of genetically modified hybrid pumpkins, which makes the color pink.

The Northwestern FFA Chapter has partnered with Randy Tegtmeier, who is growing 2 acres of these pumpkins. The Northwestern FFA will be selling the pink pumpkins at the Friday night home games.

If you have any questions or you are unable to attend the football games and want a pumpkin, contact the Ag Department at Northwestern High School, 419-846-3833 ext. 1317 or 1043.

The pumpkins will be available as long as supplies last.

Earlier this fall, Northwestern FFA had many participating members exhibit projects and/or animals at the Wayne and Ashland county fairs.

At the Wayne County Fair, there were nearly 90 shop projects this year displayed at Northwestern’s booth in the FFA building. These projects included small and medium wood projects, welding, and electrical projects. Besides the shop projects, Northwestern FFA had a large member participation in livestock and equine contests.

On Sept. 19th, Hiland FFA members competed in the District 8 Urban Soils judging contest. Members who participated in this was Grant Mast, Javan Scheufler, Preston Shamp, Lee Shetler, and Dillion Zimmerly. Contest was held in Guernsey County.

Placing’s are as follows: Grant 5th; Javan 24th; Preston 40th; Lee 22nd; and Dillion 51st. They placed 5th as a team overall and will be competing in the state contest on Oct. 12

ASHLAND, Ohio — On Sept. 13, the Crestview FFA held its annual chicken barbecue. This year, members prepared and sold over 650 halves of chicken.

Members also prepared baked potatoes, green beans, and brownies for the meal.

More than 80 percent of the members in FFA sold tickets. Abby Motter, Emily Fulk, and Shiloh Stuart each sold over 40 tickets a piece, and Lance Witmer, Bailey Walter, Kelcie Chance, Sam Oswalt and Jenna Purvis contributed by selling more than 20 tickets each.
