Gardening series for both youth and adults

AKRON – Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens’ Garden Days Series consists of five programs geared to the interests of both adults and children.

Adults have the opportunity to learn from experts on topics ranging from pruning to pest prevention. Simultaneously, youth 7-12 will take guided walks through different gardens and the greenhouse, ultimately creating a related make-and-take craft.

Attend together. Families can attend the program together or adults can choose to come to their portion of the program alone.

Plant propagation. Feb. 8, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adults will learn the skills necessary for plant propagation. Methods covered include cuttings, division, layering, budding and grafting seeds.

Youth will participate in a walk through the gardens, decorating a terra cotta pot and planting flower seeds.

Admission is $7; $5 Stan Hywet members.

Tree care. June 7, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join Denise Ellsworth on this walk through the Stan Hywet grounds and learn about planting, pruning and fertilizing small trees.

Youth will also explore the grounds, and create a “make-and-take” gift.

Reservations required; $7 general admission, $5 members.

Garden stone workshop. Aug. 2, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adults of all skill levels join garden stone expert Judy Myers in this two-hour workshop and learn the basic ingredients necessary to make garden stones for decorating.

Adults fee is $30; $24 Stan Hywet members; youth, $10 and $8.

Plant pests. Aug. 23, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adults join expert horticultural agent Denise Ellsworth as she talks about various plant pests.

Kids have the opportunity to learn about different insects in the gardens and go on an insect hunt. They also participate in a make-and-take craft activity.

Registration, $7; $5 members.

Pressing flowers. Sept. 13, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adults will join professional pressed flower artist Kathie McCurdy, who will teach the basics of pressing and preserving flowers.

Kids enjoy a garden walk and make a pressed flower craft to take home.

Fee is $15 general admission; $12, members; $10, children; $8, members (ages 7-12).
