Historic preservation event slated

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Westmoreland County Historical Society will sponsor a Building Better Communities Through Heritage Preservation: Historic Preservation Symposium and Local History Fair at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center March 14-15.

On both days, local organizations will have exhibits from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. for a local history fair. At noon March 14, a brown bag luncheon discussion, “Promoting Local History,” will be conducted by representatives from the Baltzer Meyer Historical Society, the Derry Area History Society, and the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve.

On Friday, the society will conduct the symposium. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the program runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

This symposium is designed to educate the community about how individuals can take an active role in ensuring that our past has a place in the future for the next generation of Pennsylvanians.

Some topics that will be addressed are the preservation of historic neighborhoods, grant monies and tax breaks available for renovating historic buildings, the design of educational programs and materials related to preservation issues, and conserving farmland, rural communities, and green space.

The symposium is $15 and includes lunch and materials. To register for this program call 724-836-1800. The deadline for registration is March 8.
