YOUNGSTOWN – The Mahoning Valley Railroad Heritage Association will operate a special steam-powered passenger train from Dennison, Ohio, to the Strawberries on the Square festival in Newark, Ohio, June 30.

An old-fashioned steam locomotive will pull the train as it travels through the Amish country. The train may be pulled by the Ohio Central’s newly restored 4-8-4 steam locomotive No. 6325. This is a former Grand Trunk Western Railroad steamer, and it is the largest steam locomotive owned by the Ohio Central Railroad.

The train will travel the tracks of the Columbus & Ohio River Railroad, which is a part of the Ohio Central System. The train will depart from the restored Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Station in Dennison at 8:30 a.m. and arrive in Newark at noon. Passengers will then have just over three hours to visit the festival in Newark before boarding the train for the return trip back to Dennison.

Activities at the festival include live music, clowns, a bubble gum blowing contest, a strawberry spoon race, a baby crawl-along and lots of food, including strawberry shortcake.

A feature of this steam-powered train is the “Cab Ride Raffle” where two passengers will have the opportunity to ride in the cab of the steam locomotive for a short time with the engineer and the fireman.

Coach tickets are $59 each and can be purchased by calling 800-571-1199 or by sending a check to MVRH, P.O. Box 3055, Youngstown, OH 44511.
