SALEM, Ohio – As part of the Perry Calvin Town Crier/Quaker Sam display at the Salem Historical Society, John Cabas will attend the display Feb. 11 from 1-4 p.m.

Coach Cabas was a crucial part of the evolution of Quaker Sam. During his coaching days in Salem, the school symbol was the Quaker Lady. Feeling that a more masculine team mascot was needed, he joined forces with Perry Calvin, who created the Town Crier. This teamwork eventually leads to the Quaker Sam mascot that has become a household icon in Salem.

Cabas was also the man that first coined the phrase “Love Those Quakers”

This will be a one-of-a-kind chance to meet with the man behind the concept of Quaker Sam and to see Calvin’s art work that lead to Quaker Sam.

This display will also be open Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The museum’s gift shop, which is under the coordination of Dixie Gordon, has many items available for sale that tie into the Town Crier/Quaker Sam theme. There is no admission fee for either of these events.
