Ohio Beef Expo: A roundup of shows, sales and seminars

COLUMBUS – The 14th Ohio Beef Expo will be held March 16-18 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus.

Many of the expo events, including the breed sales and the trade show, will be held in the Voinovich Livestock and Trade Center.

The trade show, featuring more than 190 display booths, is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday. Representatives from companies involved in the cattle industry will be available to answer questions throughout the expo.

The commercial exhibitors will host a free reception with food and beverages from 4-6 p.m. Friday.

Seven breed shows will be held on Friday. Eight breed sales will be held on Saturday. In total, 12 breeds of cattle will be on display at the Expo. See complete expo schedule on page 00.

Friday seminar.

A free commercial cattlemen’s seminar will be held at 1 p.m on Friday in Sale Ring No. 2 located in the Voinovich Center.

Bruce Bass, IBP vice president for cattle procurement, will be the featured speaker. Bass will focus his discussion on marketing trends in the beef industry.

An Ohio State lineup of Tom Turner, Francis Fluharty, and Henry Zerby will also be featured speakers. Turner will focus his discussion on genetics and carcass value. Fluharty will discuss managing animals to their genetic potential, as well as provide an update on DNA technology.

Zerby will focus his presentation on implants, the pros and cons associated with them and their effect on carcass quality.

Junior scene.

Youth activities are a major component of the Ohio Beef Expo. This year’s expo includes a youth beef quality assurance session Saturday afternoon, junior steer and heifer show on Sunday, and junior cattle judging competition Saturday.

Win a Gator.

Visitors to the Ohio Beef Expo who are members of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association or renew their membership at the expo can register to win a John Deere 4×2 Gator at the association booth.

The drawing will be held March 17 at 3 p.m. The winner need not be present to win, but must attend the beef expo to register.
