Ohio crop yields higher in September

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio – Based on Sept. 1 conditions, Ohio corn and soybean yields are expected to be higher than the previous month.

Compared to last year, the forecast corn yield is down 5 percent, but the forecast soybean yield is up 2 percent.

Corn yield. Ohio’s corn yield is estimated at 139 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from the Aug. 1 forecast, but 8 bushels per acre below the record high 147 bushels per acre yield set in 2000.

If realized, this yield would result in a total production of 437.9 million bushels, 10 percent below last year. Corn growers expect to harvest 3.15 million acres for grain.

Soybean yield. Ohio soybean yield is estimated at 43 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from the previous month’s forecast and 1 bushel per acre above 2000.

If realized, this yield would result in a total production of 201.7 million bushels, 8 percent above 2000. Soybean growers expect to harvest 4.69 million acres.

Corn production. The nation’s corn production is forecast at 9.24 billion bushels, down less than 1 percent from last month and 7 percent from 2000.

Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average 133.5 bushels per acre, down 0.4 bushel from August. If realized, this would be the lowest yield and production since 1997.

Soybean production. Soybean production in the United States is forecast at a record high 2.83 billion bushels, down 1 percent from Aug. 1, but 2 percent above 2000.

Based on Sept. 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 38.2 bushels per acre, down 0.5 bushel from last month, but 0.1 bushel above 2000.
