WOOSTER, Ohio — There was a large crowd in attendance for the Ohio Fall Quality Sale and the Diamond Oak Dispersal held Oct. 31 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, Wooster.
The economic difficulties that dairy producers are currently facing did not prevent the dairymen from demonstrating their appreciation for good registered Holsteins and outstanding genetics.
The sale featured consignments from various Holstein breeders and the Diamond Oak milking herd and bred heifers.
Diamond Oak
Diamond Oak, owned by Phillip Fisher, Fort Jennings, Ohio, is well known for the many outstanding bulls bred there and placed in A.I. studs, with many of the bloodlines going back to the 1975 All-American Two Year Old Cow, Wapa Bootmaker Mandy EX 96 3E.
When auctioneer Jason Lamoreaux from Brimley, Mich., dropped the gavel on the last animal in the ring, the sale had averaged $1,856 on the 83 live animals sold. The Diamond Oak Dispersal averaged $1,889 and the Ohio Fall Quality Sale $1,818.
Embryos sold in the Diamond Oak dispersal averaged $2,200 and embryos in the Ohio Fall Quality sale $1,325.
Lot one in the sale was combined with her October baby heifer calf by Goldwyn to top the Ohio Fall Quality Sale at $6,000. Firetech Advent Delia-Red, a fancy two year old with a beautiful udder, was sired by KHW Advent- Red, and from a Very Good 87 Marcrest Encore with outstanding records, two Excellent 93 maternal sisters and four Excellent dams.
Consigned by Jay Firebaugh, Wooster, this outstanding pair was purchased by Gene Iager, Fulton, Md.
Second highest
The second highest selling consignment in the Ohio Fall Quality Sale was Lot number nine, Polchin Talent Lisa Leann, a winter yearling daughter of Ladino Park Talent-Imp-ET. Her dam was a three year old Very Good 86 Dundee from six generations of Excellent dams.
Due in January to Erbacres Damion, she was consigned by Anthony and Shannon Polchin, Dorset, Ohio. She sold for $3,000 to Wendell Showalter, Leetonia, Ohio.
Topping the Diamond Oak Dispersal at $4,200 and selling to Mark Acker, Sterling, Ohio, was lot number 42, Diamond-Oak S Briana-ET. A Very Good 85 three year old daughter of Picston Shottle, her dam was Diamond-Oak Black Babe, a Mara-Thon BW Marshall daughter scored Very Good 87, and going back to the Mandy cow.
Briana had a record in progress at 2-05 360 days 32608 4.15 percent 1352 2.9 percent 951 and was still milking 87 pounds on her last test. She was pregnant with sexed semen and due in January to Million.
Second high seller at $3,900, and also purchased by Mark Acker, was the Very Good 86 three year old full sister to Briana, Diamond Oak S Barbara-ET. Just fresh and tested at 101 pounds, she had a completed record at 2-02 365 days 29550 4.2 percent 1237 3.0 percent 883.
Volume buyer
The volume buyer in the sale was Buttke Dairy Enterprises, Randleman, N.C., who purchased 10 head for a total of $14,450.
Pedigrees were read by Ted Renner, Dalton, Ohio. Ringmen were Steve Andrews, Wooster; Ken Janes, Wooster; Paul Haskins, Tiffin, Ohio; Randy Rausch, Milford Center, Ohio, and Russell Kiko, Salem, Ohio. The sale was managed by Don Alexander and the Ohio Holstein Association.
