REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — The Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board advanced four more sets of rules to public comments through the state’s e-notification system during its regular meeting on Feb. 8.

Moving on are the standards for swine, poultry layers, turkey and turkey breeders, and poultry broilers and breeders. Drafts of all four are available for review through Feb. 21 at www.agri.ohio.gov/proposedrules/proposedrules.aspx.

They also can be found on the care board’s website under “proposed standards,” at www.ohiolivestockcarestandardsboard.gov

The board also revisited its general considerations list of livestock standards, and the standards for disabled livestock, ultimately sending both on to the state’s Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review, which will determine whether the standards meet the requirements of becoming new rules in Ohio.

On track

Ohio Director of Agriculture James Zehringer set a deadline during the Jan. 18 meeting, for the subcommittees to have their work done by the first of March.

At the close of the Feb. 8 meeting, he said “we’re on track to possibly get this wrapped up” by spring.

The board’s executive director, Mike Bailey, said the next meeting will likely give focus to the sheep, goat and dairy standards. It will be held Feb. 22 at the Ohio Department of Agriculture, from 1-5 p.m.
