Pa. corn yield up 52 bushels/acre over last year

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Pennsylvania’s 2003 production of corn for grain, soybeans, and potatoes is expected to be above last year, based on Nov. 1 conditions.

According to the Pennsylvania Agricultural Statistics Service, corn for grain production is forecast at 108 million bushels, 83 percent more than last year.

Acreage for harvest is estimated at 900,000 with an average yield of 120 bushels per acre, 52 bushels per acre more than last year.

Beans. Soybean production is forecast at 14.6 million bushels, 44 percent more than last year.

Acreage for harvest is estimated at 365,000 with an average yield of 40 bushels per acre, 14 bushels per acre more than last year.

Potato production is forecast at 4.13 million hundredweight, 59 percent more than last year.

Acreage for harvest is expected to be 14,000, with an average yield of 295 hundredweight per acre, compared to a yield of 185 hundredweight per acre last year on the same number of acres.
