Quilt Odyssey set in Gettysburg, Pa.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Quilt Odyssey 2001, an annual quilt show and symposium, will take place at the All-Star Sports Center located four miles south of the square in Gettysburg, Pa., on Old Business Route 15 from Aug. 2-5.

Quilts from the annual contest will be on exhibit. These quilts come from all over the United States from Maine to California – even Hawaii. This year, the exhibit includes quilts from Canada, Japan, England and the Netherlands.

In the same location will be an antique quilt exhibit featuring quilts from Franklin, York and Adams counties, plus an exhibit of Tifaifai (Tahitian applique) quilts. The exhibits help to show how quilting has evolved as an art form.

Merchant mall. A large merchants mall with more than 85 merchants will offer the latest in fabric (including Civil War reproduction fabrics), quilting gadgets, frames, furniture, sewing machines, books, supplies and quilt-related gifts and merchandise.

Exhibit and merchant mall hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday.

Lectures. Historical lectures will be offered, both as a “light lunch and lecture” and in the evenings. On Aug. 3, there will be a light lunch and slide lecture at noon on the York County Documentation project.

At 8 p.m., Jeana Kimball will lecture on pioneer women and their quilts at the Eisenhower Inn. Saturday evening at 6:30, Kimball will lecture on 19th century applique and Anita Shackelford will lecture on “Dating Old Quilts.”

Tickets must be purchased in advance for “light lunch and lecture” programs.

Quilt appraisals. Phyllis Twigg, a certified quilt appraiser, will be on hand to offer her services. If you are interested in having your family heirloom appraised, appointments can be made before the show by calling the Quilt Odyssey.
