Readers get creative for Holiday Haiku contest

Our readers showed their poetic prowess this season by sending in more than 70 submissions for our Holiday Haiku contest. We even ended up in classrooms!

Two teachers from Minerva High School — Julie Rine and Allison Jeric — sent in submissions from some of their students.

In the end, only one could be the winner. It ended up being a haiku by Linda Silvernail, who described her win as “a nice Christmas present!”

Thank you to all who submitted. We couldn’t have pulled it off without you!
And now for the winning haiku:

manger stands empty
awaiting the Christ child’s birth
rejoice! he is here
