COLUMBUS – “Something for every dairy producer to enjoy,” – the theme for the 2001 Spring Dairy Expo – set the stage for this year’s event March 29-31 in Columbus.
A 5-year-old Holstein cow and Holstein yearling heifer were named supreme champions from the 560 head of dairy cattle that paraded through the tanbark ring.
Over 40 commercial exhibitors showcased their products to exhibitors and visitors alike and over 200 of the highest caliber dairy animals were sold through the sale ring.
And, a number of visitors, industry people, youth and exhibitors attended and participated in the judging contests and receptions held by the American Dairy Association Dairy Council Mid East and Ohio Beef Council during the three days of the show.

The Ohio Ayrshire Spring Sale had 43 head sell for an average of $1,282. The high-selling animal was a senior calf, Brook Hollow Heligo Hope at $2,600.
Her dam was the 2000 unanimous All-American 4-year-old cow. The heifer was consigned by Delbert and Heather Yoder of West Salem, Ohio, and was purchased by Rachel Smith, McGaheysville, Va.
The Midwest Revue was also held Thursday evening and Modern Associates of St. Paris, Ohio, managed the sale that averaged $2,790 on 58 head of Brown Swiss animals.
The top selling lot at $8,500 was GS Ensign Tootie, a fresh young R-Hart Simon Ensign-ET backed by an 88-point show winning dam.
She was purchased by Gary and Jeremy McDonald of Stephans City, Va., and consigned by Jenna Hoffman of Mingo, Ohio.
Holstein sale.
The Spring National Expo Holstein Sale, managed by the Ohio Holstein Association, sold 58 lots.
Topping the sale at $10,300 each were first choices of a January 2001 Delta Webster from Sher-Est Rudolph Stress-ET and a December 2000 or January 2001 choice of Ricecrest Emerson-ET calves from Sher-Est Thor Soup-TW.
The Webster first choice from the VG-86, No. 8 Canadian Protein Cow was consigned by the Stanton Brothers of Ontario, Canada, and purchased by Golden Oaks Holsteins of Illinois.
The Emerson choice is backed by a VG-88 3-year-old Thor with over 34,000M. This first choice was consigned by Sherman Erlandson of Westby, Wis., and purchased by Mark Mueller of Athens, Wis. The sale averaged $2,512.
Buckeye Dairy Club sale.
During this three-day event, the Buckeye Dairy Club from The Ohio State University holds their annual sales. This year, they added an additional group of top quality Guernseys for sale along with their Jerseys and Holsteins. The 11 Guernsey embryos and cattle sold for an average of $1,793.
Topping the sale was Spring Walk Hornets Cookie, a September 2000 Myrtledales Smokey Hornet-ET daughter backed by an Excellent dam that ranks No. 73 on the High CPI list.
She was purchased by Nelsglow Dairy of Hilmar, Calif. The consignor was the William Wachtel Family of Big Prairie, Ohio.
This year, 32 Holsteins averaged $2,225 with the top seller going for $6,500 to Lucas Ayars of Mechanicsburg, Ohio.
The 3-year-old VG-88 Shoremore Mason ET, consigned by Adam Gross of Ashville, Ohio, was fifth as a senior 2-year-old at the 2000 Spring National Show.
The Buckeye Dairy Club Jersey Sale averaged $1,950 on 35 lots with the high seller knocked off at $4,600 to the Golddust Syndicate of Chester, S.C.
This first choice of a Rock Ella Perimiter-ET flush to the EX-95, 1996 National Jersey Jug Futurity Winner, C Tops Impressive was consigned by Kevin and Darlene Williams of McConnelsville, Ohio.
A silent auction of donated items was available for bidders. Topping that sale was a donated Bonnie Mohr print Autumn’s Gold at $425 and purchased by J&J Steak Barn. The silent auction brought in over $2,000.
Special recognition.
Every year various awards and presentations are made. This year’s Ohio PDCA Award of Honor was presented to John Spreng, Jr. of Bucyrus, Ohio.
The recipient of the 2000 Judi Collinsworth Outstanding Junior Exhibitor Memorial Award was Chad Griffith, of Bethel, Ohio.
Receiving the top cash award, donated by John and Bonnie Ayars of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, for being the top judge in the Ohio PDCA judging conference, was Tim Baumgartner of Wisconsin.
Don Hutzel, Steve Moff, Brandon Lawwill, and Eric Topp, all of Ohio, placed second through fifth, respectively.
In the all-youth contest in the junior division, top team honors went to the Lorain County team. Top honors in the senior division went to Kelly Epperly of Anna, Ohio. Top senior team honors went to the Brown County team.
Showmanship contest.
Over 50 youth competed in the showmanship contest. Winning the 11 and under beginners class was Erica Graves, Cable, Ohio. Jess Wilcox of West Salem, Ohio, finished second.
Allison Stammen, New Weston, Ohio, and Neil Duncan of Warsaw, Ohio, topped the class of Intermediate showmen and Lucas Ayars of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, and Kyle Watts of Killbuck, Ohio, took home the top two senior showmanship placings.
The tanbark brought the five breeds of cattle from as far east as Maryland to the western states of Idaho and California as well as the northern state of Wisconsin to the southern state of Georgia.
Cattle were exhibited from 11 different states and Canada. Champions were selected in each breed, both in the junior and open shows. Here is a list of the champions for each breed:

From these individuals a supreme champion heifer and a supreme champion cow were selected. The supreme champion heifer, winning the “Rare Coin Award” was the Holstein junior champion, Gus-Wind Encr Dandelion-ET, exhibited by Butlerview & Rosedale, Chebonese, Ill.
Supreme champion cow honors went to the Holstein grand champion, Donnek Pearl Skychief owned by Nelson Dairy, Chris and Joyce Nelson of Urbana, Ohio.
Awards.
Cash awards were presented to each junior and grand champion by the respective breed associations. Supreme champions also received an additional cash award.
The Spring Dairy Expo 2002 dates are April 4-6 at The Ohio Exposition Center, the Ohio State Fairgrounds, Columbus.
