AKRON — Join the Ohio and Erie Canalway Coalition (OECC) for the kick off of our health and wellness program, Healthy Steps April 12 at 11:30 a.m. at Lock 3 (200 S. Main St.) in downtown Akron. Registrants will receive a free lunch and materials to help get them started on their health and wellness goals.

Healthy Steps encourages individuals and families to step their way to a healthier lifestyle. By simply walking 8,733 steps per week, participants will have completed a marathon — 26.2 miles — over a span of six weeks. That’s approximately 52,400 steps.

Healthy Steps encourages participants to exercise, explore and enjoy the natural, historical and recreational resources along the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

Prizes

Be one of the first 250 people to sign up at www.ohioeriecanal.org and receive a free pedometer. Participants will also be eligible for prizes. At the end of the six weeks, the highest stepper will receive an iPod.

Participants who walk an average of 10,000 steps per day will be entered into a drawing to receive a $100 gift certificate from Vertical Runner. Participants who walk an average of 7,500 steps each day will be entered into a drawing to receive a $75 gift certificate from Vertical Runner and participants who walk an average of 5,000 steps per day will be entered into a drawing to receive a $50 gift certificate from Vertical Runner.

Every participant will receive a free fruit and yogurt parfait coupon from Rubber City McDonald’s and a voucher for an Akron Aeros game.

Returning this year is the corporate challenge. If you are a business in Summit County, you are eligible to participate. To register for the Corporate Challenge, visit www.ohioeriecanal.org. Local businesses will compete against each other for the Healthy Steps Trophy.

Each Tuesday, beginning April 16 at noon, Healthy Steps participants will meet at the Richard Howe House at 47 W. Exchange St. to get their steps in.
