WOOSTER, Ohio – The 2001 Ohio Spring Classic and Jackpot Sale sponsored by the Ohio Jersey Breeder’s Association is headed for the record books.

The sale average of $2,489 on 80 females, well ahead of last year’s $2,010 average on 71 head, set a new record for the annual sale, according to Lowell Stevens, sale chairman.

Consignments came from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky, Kansas, New York, Maryland, Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada. Buyers came from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Virginia, Iowa, Arkansas, Maryland, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ontario and Quebec.

“This is the highest average in the history of the Ohio Jersey Breeders’ Association’s sales,” Stevens said.

David Wedertz, a Jersey breeder and auctioneer from Kenton, cried the sale

“I don’t see how this sale can get any better,” Wedertz said. “We set another record for our sale average and we came close to breaking the record for the top-selling animal at our state sale.”

The record price for the top selling animal in the sale was set in 1988 when a consignment from Buckeye Grove Farm in Beallsville, Ohio, was purchased by Norman Nabholtz of West Union, Iowa, for $7,100.

Wedertz admitted that he was surprised at how well the cattle sold given the current milk prices. Still, he noted there is a strong demand for cattle and there is a tremendous market for Jerseys.

Sale topper.

The top-selling animal was Jaspar Renaissance Delcey-ET, a February 1999 daughter of Hollylane Renaissance out of Jaspar T TS Dominique. “Delcey” was consigned by Jim and Tammy Sparling of Ontario, Canada, and sold for $6,500 to Steve Christman, Kim Myers and David Alexander of Bremen, Ind.

Enniskillen MCT Grove III-ET, consigned by Enniskillen Jersey Farm, Ontario, Canada, was the second high-selling animal. The March 2000 daughter of Master C Tops out of Enniskillen Title Grove sold for $6,400 to Waverly Farm, Clearbrook, Va., and Norman Nabholtz, West Union, Iowa.

Bridon Pre Mindy consigned by Bridon Jerseys, Ontario Canada was the third high-selling animal. The September, 2000 daughter of Bridon Premonition-ET out of Bridon Ren Marissa-Et sold for $6,200 to Ron and Christy Ratliff, Garnett, Kan.

Spahrs Buckle Opp Rhoda, consigned by Spahr Jersey Farm, Findlay, Ohio, was purchased by Andrew and Wendy Bok, Defiance, Ohio, for $1,625. The June 2000 daughter of Long Distance Buckle-ET is out of Meadowsweet Opp Lady Rose.

The jackpot sale averaged $1,362 on six animals. Each year, 25 percent of the sale proceeds are put into a jackpot, which is awarded to the top three animals based on their completed 2-year-old records.
