AKRON – Before there were overpaid professional players, overpriced seats, or over-budget stadiums there was vintage base ball.

The Akron Black Stockings and the Akron Lady Locks, two vintage clubs sponsored by Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, once again swing into action May 4-Sept. 20.

The game is played in 1860s-style uniforms and under 19th-century rules.

Period vernacular is interspersed throughout the game. Players are “ballists,” runs are “acres,” errors are “muffs,” and cheers of “huzzah!” are exclaimed when there’s a score.

Catcher’s masks, gloves and other safety equipment are not used in vintage base ball, but female players are allowed to catch the ball in their skirts as long as skin is not exposed in the process.

Afterward, supporters are welcome to join the players on the field.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 6-12. Stan Hywet members are free.

Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is located at 714 North Portage Path in Akron.
