LOGAN, Ohio – The only washboard factory still operating in the nation, Columbus Washboard Company, is based in Logan, and has provided the inspiration for the first International Washboard Festival to be held in downtown Logan in June.
The music festival will be held June 15-17 and will feature washboard and other musicians from around the world including jazz, rhythm and blues performers.
Several musicians who have already been scheduled to participate in the event are Ralf Reynolds and the Rhythm Rascals, who play on Main Street at Disney World; Big Mama Sue (Sue Kroninger), who uses an antique gravy whip and an eggbeater to play her souped-up washboard; and Buffalo Ridge from Cincinnati, as well as several other nationally-known and local musicians.
Unique music. The musicians who will be featured throughout the festival use washboards, along with banjos, guitars, drums and keyboards to create unique music. In addition, the washboards are often embellished with multiple bells and whistles to add a percussion sound to the instrument.
In addition to a continual stream of musicians who are slated to play throughout the weekend, the festival will provide entertainment in the form of rides, food, children’s activities, two parades and a variety of contests.
Other activities. In conjunction with the festival, bingo will be offered and a quilt show featuring works of art by local quilters will be displayed.
Event organizers also are planning to offer tours of historic sites and buildings throughout the weekend.
During the same weekend, the Logan-Hocking Chamber of Commerce will host the annual Car Club Cruise-In along the streets of downtown Logan.
