Orville Freeman

Orville Freeman, a Democratic Farmer Labor party member who served as governor of Minnesota from 1955 to 1961, died Feb. 20, 2003. As secretary of agriculture under presidents Kennedy and Johnson (1961 to 1969), Freeman helped to create the food stamp program, school breakfast programs, and promoted the export of U.S. farm products.
