Wintersville woman’s quilt is show favorite

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. – Marlies Brandt of Wintersville won the coveted People’s Choice award at the Panhandle Piecemakers Quilt Club’s 17th annual quilt show, held at the John D. Rockefeller Career Center, New Cumberland, W.Va.

Brandt’s Broken Star quilt contained more than 1,800 pieces in shades of brown and beige, with the background surrounding the pieced star done in a hand-feather quilting design, and framed with a Seminole pieced border.

Other winners.

Exhibitors received ribbons in 15 categories, including a Best of Category, and top three placings. Student entries received honorable mention. The awards are as follows:

First quilt: Best of category, Lucy Timko, Toronto, Ohio;

Baby quilt: Best of category, Donna Harris, New Cumberland; 1. Vesta Durbin, Chester;

Wallhanging, hand quilted: Best of category, Panhandle Piecemakers; 1. Beth Thomson, East Liverpool, Ohio;

Wallhanging, machine quilted: Best of category, Barbara Wright; 1. Marlies Brandt (2); Bunny Kairus, New Brighton, Pa.;

The 2001 raffle quilt, Seven Sisters, was won by Mary A. Bushlow of Steubenville, Ohio.
