  • 4 s flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 shortening
  • 1 1/2 s unsulfured baking molasses
  • 1/4 sugar
  • 1 brown egg


Heat oven to 350°. Sift together first six ingredients. Melt shortening in saucepan large enough fir mixing cookies. Stir in molasses and sugar. Cool. Beat in egg. Gradually add flour mixture. Beat about 20 strokes. Shape into balls. Place on greased cookie sheets. Bake 15 minutes or until cookies have lightly browned. Store in covered stone jar. Makes 4 dozen.
