1. How to harvest, process and store black walnuts
Autumn is the season to harvest black walnuts in Ohio — and the earlier, the better. Black walnuts are native to Ohio and can be found throughout the state.
Black walnuts have to be de-hulled in order to get to the “meat” of the nut. Though tedious and possibly time-consuming, the rewards of de-hulling are great.
2. New record at Tuscarawas County Fair sale
This year’s Tuscarawas County Fair’s auction brought in a record-breaking $723,296.40. The sale took place Sept. 18 and 20.

3. Equipment companies showcase their newest at Farm Science Review
This year’s Farm Science Review showcased some of the up-and-coming farm machinery. John Deere, Case IH, New Holland and AGCO shared their latest equipment, including new software, security alerts, lower maintenance machines and new precision planters.
4. All about apples: Tips for using, picking and storing
Mark your calendars for apple picking this fall. Through the end of October, apples will be harvested and numerous farm markets will have fresh apples available.
Out of more than 7,500 varieties of apples, certain ones are best for specific purposes, like baking, making applesauce or cider or freezing.
5. Lillie Farm: Adversity won’t keep this farm down
The Lillie Farm in Kinsman, Ohio was established in 1811 as a dairy operation. Today, the 132 acre farm is used for growing soybeans and corn.
The farm has endured droughts, tough winters and even a barn fire, but it has always recovered and pushed forward.
