If repairing your fence isn’t on your to-do list, you should consider adding it. Repairing your wire or barbed wire fence will save you lots of trouble trying to wrangle your herd off the highway and back onto your property.

Instructables user mazzmn has a 4-step guide that shows, in detail, how to patch a wire or barbed wire fence.

Prevention is the first step

Mazzmn doesn’t mention prevention, but it’s a good philosophy. Prevent fence splits by keeping your fence line clear of large branches and debris that could fall on your fence and damage it.

Also, if you have a wire fence that is being damaged by livestock, consider investing in an electric fence. An electrified fence will discourage livestock from jumping the fence and damaging it.

What will I need?

You’ll need several tools to repair your fence. Everything should be available at your local farm supply or hardware store.

Supplies:

• Fence splicer/splitter
• Wire
• Wire cutter
• Screwdriver
• Fence staples
• Pliers
• Tape
• Gloves (to protect your hands)

Let’s get started

When you find the split, make sure to clear the area of fallen trees, branches and other vegetation that can get in your way. You want to give yourself plenty of room to work.

Next, remove any kinks from the wire. Check further down the fence line to make sure the kinks are completely out. Removing fence staples may help clear the kinks out of the line.
