Soil erosion and nutrient runoff are big deals. In fact, reporter Chris Kick recently published a series of stories about Lake Erie’s algal blooms and their link to a glut of phosphorus in the lake.

How can you prevent soil erosion and nutrient runoff from your fields? The answer is cover crops.

The University of Wisconsin Extension service just released this video detailing the benefits of growing winter rye after harvesting corn for silage. Extension agent Kevin Shelly then discusses how to determine if your rye is in its “boot stage,” the stage when yield and quality are optimized.
