Tractor ride winds through northeastern Ohio

WARREN, Ohio — The Antique Tractor Club of Trumbull County had its fifth annual Fall Foliage Tractor Ride Oct. 10.

Lee Silvernail, driving his 1981 International 1486, led the caravan of 36 tractors and 81 people.

The riders and drivers, who hailed from Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, were undaunted by the chilly morning and dark clouds. As the day went on, however, the sky turned sunny and blue.

The group started at the Middlefield Auction Barn on Nauvoo Road, and traveled 35 miles in the Middlefield, Ohio, area, covering the corners of Trumbull, Geauga and Ashtabula counties.

Duane Tricker had the oldest tractor, a 1939 Farmall F-30. It was followed by B.J. Edics’ 1940 Farmall H and Bill Holks’ 1940 Minneapolis-Moline R.

Organizers reported just a few minor problems along the way, but nothing serious, which shows how well members take care of their old pieces of history.

There were 12 different brands of tractors on the ride: Allis Chalmers, Case, David Brown, Farmall, Ford, Fordson, International, John Deere, Minneapolis-Moline, New Holland, Oliver and Tafe.

The oldest participant may have been 85-year-old Lois Swiger, from Warren, Ohio, and the youngest, 3-year-old, Ian Tricker, who was strapped in his carseat, inside the cab of his father Craig’s 2000 John Deere 6310.

The group stopped at 4-H Camp Whitewood for an Amish wedding lunch. There were also other activities to enjoy in conjunction with the Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival.

From there, the group went to Windsor Mills Covered Bridge for some picture taking. The bridge was originally constructed in 1867.

The tractor club holds a monthly meeting at the Ali Baba Grotto on Perkins-Jones Road in Warren. They are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.; for information call 330-240-6407.
