Mountain Xpress tells of a “folk system” of agriculture is being promoted in Appalachia, drawing on food systems of days gone by. This style of agriculture focuses on growing and selling food locally, much like food was produced locally in Appalachia years ago.

Sustainability is a focus of folk agriculture, as well as trading one’s produce with other people. Though it isn’t widespread yet, folk agriculture could make an appearance in more than just rural areas, too.

From Mountain Xpress:

“That focus on sustainability is driving the return to these traditional systems for many local growers who also want to see the concept brought into urban areas.”
