What’s Up Your Family Tree? Genealogy Program Set at Salem Public Library

Salem Public Library is providing an opportunity for genealogy enthusiasts to increase their investigative skills with the program “Not Online? Doesn’t Mean Out of Reach” to be presented by Chris Staats on July 25, 2016 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the library’s Quaker Meeting Room located at 821 E. State St., Salem, OH.
While some research problems can be solved completely online, many more can’t. Often, research that requires access to remote records comes unnecessarily to a halt. Although a particular record we need may not be online, the internet offers researchers a number of options to continue the research from afar, better prepare for a road trip to a repository, or both. Whether it’s ordering microfilm, requesting lookups, hiring a local researcher, or using online catalogs to target records of interest, the fact that a record itself isn’t online shouldn’t determine whether or not we find the answers to difficult research problems.
Chris Staats is a genealogical researcher, presenter, and writer. He has written articles for Family Tree Magazine, Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly, and other publications. He has given presentations and webinars covering methodology, genealogical resources, technology, and other topics. He is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and Seminar Chairperson for the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Genealogical Committee.
