REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — Ohio farmers planted an estimated 3.35 million acres of corn this past spring based on a June 1 Agricultural Survey conducted by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Ohio field office. This is down 500,000 acres from the previous year.
Soybean planted acreage for the Buckeye State is estimated at 4.6 million acres for 2008, up 450,000 acres from last year.
Total dry hay acreage is forecast at 1.26 million acres, up 110,000 acres from the previous year. This includes alfalfa, grain, and all other types of hay.
Burley tobacco acreage is forecast at 3,100 acres in 2008, down 400 acres from 2007.
Nationally, U.S. corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 87.3 million acres in 2008, down 7 percent from 2007 but 11 percent higher than 2006.
The 2008 soybean planted area for the U.S. is estimated at 74.5 million acres, up 17 percent from last year, but 1 percent below the record high acreage in 2006.
Wheat update
Based on a July 1 yield survey, Ohio winter wheat producers expect to harvest 70.4 million bushels in 2008, up 53 percent from the previous year.
Producers expect to harvest 1.05 million acres for grain or seed from the 1.1 million acres seeded last fall. The average state yield is forecast at 67 bushels per acre.
Stock picture
Ohio corn stocks in all positions on June 1, totaled 199.6 million bushels, 49 percent above the 134.4 million bushels stored on June 1, 2007.
On-farm stocks, at 93.0 million bushels, accounted for 47 percent of the total stored and increased 58 percent from the 59.0 million bushels last year. Off-farm stocks increased 41 percent from a year ago to 106.6 million bushels.
Soybean stocks in Ohio on June 1, totaled 39.3 million bushels, down 30 percent from a year ago. On-farm storage at 13.5 million bushels accounted for 34 percent of total storage.
Ohio’s on-farm wheat stocks as of June 1 at 50,000 bushels decreased 450,000 bushels from June 1, 2007.
National stocks
U.S. corn in all positions on June 1 totaled 4.03 billion bushels, up 14 percent from June 1, 2007. Of the total stocks, 1.97 billion bushels are stored on farms.
U.S. soybeans stored in all positions on June 1 totaled 676 billion bushels, down 38 percent from June 1, 2007.
On-farm stocks totaled 227 million bushels, down 55 percent from a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 449 million bushels, are down 24 percent from the previous year.
U.S. all wheat stored in all positions on June 1 totaled 306 million bushels, down 33 percent from a year ago. On-farm stocks are estimated at 25.6 million bushels, down 65 percent from last year. Off-farm stocks, at 280 million bushels, are down 27 percent from a year ago.
