BUTLER, Pa. – A beginning beekeeper seminar planned in western Pennsylvania can help you avoid the many pitfalls you may encounter as you begin managing honeybees.
The seminar has been scheduled for two dates and locations: Feb. 10, at the Mercer County Extension Office, and Feb. 17, at the Beaver County Extension Office. Both sessions offer the same program beginning at 9 a.m. and adjourning at 3 p.m.
Reservations are required. Registration fee is $15 per person and includes lunch and program materials. Reservations must be postmarked one week prior to the session you plan to attend.
For the more experienced beekeeper, a seminar is planned for March 9-10 at the Beaver Campus of Penn State University.
Friday’s program will be held from 7-9 p.m. Participants will learn about various apiary products and will share in the experience of a local beekeeper’s international travel in Panama and Vietnam.
Saturday’s program will include discussions on improving beekeeping management, monitoring and controlling mite populations and brood diseases, and marketing and adding value to apiary products.
Stephen Murphey, nationally recognized allergist and professor at the University of Pittsburgh, will offer an update on bee sting allergies and treatment.
Additional speakers include Maryann Frazier, Penn State University senior extension associate; David Hackenberg, Pa. representative for the National Honey Board; David Eyre and Jean Eyre, beekeepers; Gwen Lutz, beekeeper; Tom McCormack, Duane Hall, and Bonnie Nightman, western Pa. apiary inspectors; J. Lee Miller, Penn State extension agent, and Diana Sammataro, Penn State University.
Registrations must be postmarked by March 1. Registration fee is $15.
