In Ontario, Oregon and the surrounding region, crops like quinoa, camelina and pumpkins may turn out to be more than just experimental. The Argus Observer reports that researchers are looking into the benefits that these crops could bring to local growers.

Oregon’s climate is fitting for growing quinoa. There is a possibility that it could be used as a double-crop with wheat. Camelina is another match for the area’s weather. Based on research, the plant requires little water, so irrigation isn’t necessary.

Popularity is growing for quinoa and camelina, so adding these plants into the crop rotation may bring economic gain for local farmers. Pumpkin seeds are the new fad in snack foods, so farmers are trying to find ways to keep up with the demand.
