WEST SALEM, Ohio — The Northwestern FFA Chapter has an Ag in the Classroom committee that goes over to Northwestern Elementary once a month to teach elementary students about different aspects of agriculture. In the month of January, the students learned about poultry. The students were taught about some of the benefits and products that poultry allows us to have, including feathers, coats, blankets, meat, eggs, and many more.
The students also had the opportunity to handle a chick, compliments of Meyer Hatchery. After this, the children received a booklet filled with fun facts and activities about poultry to take home.
For the month of February, the students learned about water pollution. Kelly Riley from the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District came in to speak about this subject. She told a story about “Freddy the Fish” to demonstrate how animals can be harmed when pollutants enter their home. Ag in the Classroom committee members then asked the children about different parts of pollution.
Now, the Northwestern FFA Chapter is now selling strawberries as a fundraiser. The strawberries are fresh from Florida and will be delivered the week of March 17.
They will be available in a full flat, which is $20, or a half flat, which is $12. A full flat is 12 pints or approximately 11 pounds, and a half flat is 6 pints or approximately 5.5 pounds.
