CADIZ, Ohio – Livestock producers who use pasture for feed can learn the principles of Management Intensive Grazing at a series of sessions designed to make the most of their time.
The Eastern Ohio Grazing School will run Jan. 25, Feb. 1, 8 and 10 at the Puskarich Public Library in Cadiz.
Management Intensive Grazing is an approach that allows the animals to do the work of harvesting, while people take care of the management.
One advantage of this approach to grazing is its flexibility. Most livestock producers can use the ideas presented to increase the productivity of their pasture (and therefore their animals), and/or decrease human labor and cash inputs.
Students will be guided through an evaluation of their own situation and goals, so that they can focus the rest of the time on the best way to apply these management concepts on their farms.
Technical information will provide students the “how to” answers they need to begin making improvements right away. This information includes soils, plants, paddock layout, water system design, animal nutrition (beef, dairy, sheep), winter feeding, and heavy use areas.
Since profitability plays such an important role in deciding whether to try new strategies, the profitability of Management Intensive Grazing will be addressed as part of this program. Experienced grazers will be on hand to discuss getting started with this management method.
Registration is $20 per individual or $30 per couple. For registrations received after Jan. 19, add a $5 late fee per registration.
