Ohio ranchers adding to cattle numbers

Even amid growing prices, the demand for beef remains, so Ohio cattle ranchers are adding to their herds.

The Columbus Dispatch reports figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, citing that ranchers in Ohio have expanded their herds by 2 percent since last year. The price of calves is also up this year. In June, calves were worth $1,000 to $1,600 in comparison to the price range of $640 to $1,000 in June 2013.

Herd numbers in Ohio are still considered low, so ranchers aren’t having as many of their cows slaughtered. Instead, they are keeping them in hopes of breeding them and then selling them later at a higher price, especially while favorable weather conditions for grazing continue.
