UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State alumnus William B. Darrow, of Honey Grove, Pa., has committed $5.4 million to support programs in the College of Agricultural Sciences.
“We are discussing a range of specific programs and initiatives with Bill that might benefit from his philanthropy,” said Robert Steele, dean of the college, who noted that the gift is part of Darrow’s estate plans.
“We are very grateful for his continuing generosity and his visionary commitment to our college’s students and faculty.”
Still farming. William Darrow grew up on his father’s farm in Bucks County.
His father, Charles Darrow, wanted him to attend Penn State to learn more about farming.
After graduating from the university in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in dairy science, he lived and worked on an upper Bucks County farm until about 20 years ago, when he moved to Honey Grove in Juniata County.
He lives in an 1842 farmhouse on one of his four farms in the area, where he owns and manages a herd of about 160 bison.
Previous help. His previous philanthropy to Penn State includes two endowed scholarships named for his parents – the Charles B. Darrow Award in Fuel Science in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, and the Esther J. Darrow Scholarship in Horticulture in the College of Agricultural Sciences – as well as the William B. Darrow Graduate Scholarship in Ruminant Nutrition in the College of Agricultural Sciences.
